FACTS ABOUT HOMELESSNESS
- On a single night in January 2009, there were 643,000 homeless people in shelters or on the streets.
- African Americans represent 38.7 percent of the sheltered homeless population.
- Victims of domestic violence constituted twelve percent of the sheltered homeless population.
- Veterans represent about 11.1 percent of all sheltered adults.
- Nearly four in ten sheltered adults (37.8 percent) has a disability.
- Nearly three percent of the sheltered homeless population is 62 years old or older.
- Nearly two-thirds of the total sheltered population (64.1 percent) are in single-person households.
